Patios Or Decks: Which Is Best For Your Houston Property?

Many homeowners wonder what the difference is between a patio and a deck; if this is you, wonder no more. While decks and patios fall into the Houston hardscape category and are often confused with one another, there are a few key differences. While both provide open-air living spaces, that’s where the similarities end, and the vast array of differences begins. Let us share with you the differences so you can determine whether a patio or deck is best for your outdoor living space in Houston.

Location

A deck is typically located at the back of a house and overlooks the backyard. It can be accessed through interior rooms such as your kitchen, living room, or family room. While some decks appear to be ground level, such as floating or ground-level decks, they are still elevated off the ground.

On the other hand, patios are directly on the ground and do not have multiple levels or tiers. The word patio is translated to mean courtyard. Like a deck, a patio can be affixed to the house’s exterior or located further away from your home to separate structures.

Privacy: Patios tend to provide Houston homeowners more privacy than a deck, especially if they are enclosed with walls or a roof. Decks provide Houston homeowners with more viewing space.

Expense:  Many people ask if it is more expensive to build a patio or hire a deck builder. The short answer is that deck building is more labor-intensive than a patio, wood is often costlier than stamped concrete or paver, and in Houston, you will need to obtain a permit for deck building unless you choose a floating or ground-level deck. However, a deck provides you with a higher return on your investment should you decide to list your home on the market.

Maintenance: With a patio, you won’t need to do as much routine upkeep as you would if you have a deck built. While you may choose to seal your patio, it’s not necessary, since pavers are highly durable, whereas most decks will need to be stained or sealed every three to five years. Both patios and decks will need to be inspected and cleaned annually to keep your backyard an enjoyable oasis.

Lifespan: Both a patio and a deck will provide Houston homeowners with years of enjoyment. On average, a well-built deck will last 20 years, as well as a patio.
